New Zealand announced two important post-study changes on May 29, 2026. From November 16, a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa will help some graduates who are not eligible for the existing Post Study Work Visa, while certain Level 7 graduate diploma holders will gain a new path to post-study work.
The announcement improves options, but it does not turn every short course into a work route. Qualification level, study duration, previous post-study visas and the student’s earlier bachelor’s degree can all change the outcome.
The new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa
From November 16, 2026, eligible graduates with certain New Zealand qualifications at Levels 5 to 7 may apply for six months of open work rights when their course does not qualify them for a Post Study Work Visa. The qualification must generally have been studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks and cannot be an English, foundation or bridging course.
The application must generally be made within three months of the New Zealand student visa expiring. Applicants must meet the published funds and health requirements and cannot have already held a Short-term Graduate Work Visa or Post Study Work Visa.
What six months of work rights can and cannot do
The visa is designed to provide time to find employment and, where suitable, move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa. Work must be for an employer under an employment agreement or contract for services; the route does not permit business ownership.
Six months is a short runway. Students should begin employer research, CV preparation and professional registration work before completing the course rather than treating graduation as the starting point.
" Post-study work value belongs to the exact qualification and student history, not to the phrase “job-ready course.”
The Level 7 graduate diploma extension
Also from November 16, eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa will extend to graduates who complete a full-time Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand and also hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas. Cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning may affect eligibility under the announced conditions.
The resulting Post Study Work Visa can match the period spent studying the graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. Applicants will need the bachelor’s degree certificate and official transcript, among other evidence.
One graduate diploma student already holds a bachelor’s degree and may qualify for the extended Post Study Work Visa rule. Another does not hold a bachelor’s degree and may need to rely on the new six-month route unless the qualification appears on the relevant list.
Previous post-study visas can close the route
New Zealand states that a person can receive only one Post Study Work Visa. Someone who has already held one is not eligible for another, even after later study. A previous Post Study Work Visa also prevents access to the new short-term graduate route.
Before enrolling, disclose all prior New Zealand visas and study. Advice that ignores an earlier post-Study Visa can produce a course plan with no intended work outcome.
How Indian students should compare courses now
Ask the provider for the exact NZQCF level, full-time duration, qualification type and current post-study eligibility. Then verify the answer through Immigration New Zealand rather than relying on a counsellor’s brochure.
Compare tuition, living costs, professional demand and the time available to find qualifying work. A longer or more expensive program is not automatically better, but the cheapest course can become costly if it does not support the student’s actual career plan.
Quick checklist before you move ahead
- Confirm the exact NZQCF level and qualification type.
- Check whether the course leads to PSWV or the six-month route.
- Verify the full-time study duration in New Zealand.
- Disclose any previous Post Study Work Visa.
- Prepare evidence of an earlier bachelor’s degree where relevant.
- Start employer research before course completion.
- Recheck the final November 2026 instructions before applying.
